Okay, let's get one thing straight: I'm a Chicago guy. Born and bred. And yeah, I used to care about the Chicago Bulls record. Used to. Now? Watching them is like watching paint dry, only the paint is beige and the canvas is a participation trophy. But, I'm hearing that another set of Bulls is making waves... and maybe, just maybe, it's worth a sliver of my attention.
This Red Murdock dude, this linebacker from the University of Buffalo, just broke the all-time FBS record for forced fumbles. Seventeen! Seventeen times he's ripped the ball out of some poor sap's hands. That’s… impressive, I guess. I mean, I haven't watched college ball since Doug Flutie was chucking Hail Marys, but still.
And get this, he surpassed another Khalil to get there: Khalil Mack, who also played for Buffalo and went on to become a freakin' NFL superstar. It's like some weird football prophecy being fulfilled. Is there something in the water up there in Buffalo? Some secret linebacker-producing factory? Or are these just crazy coincidences?
Murdock is currently second in the FBS in forced fumbles this season, with six. Six forced fumbles in six games. That's one a game, for you math whizzes out there. He's also leading the FBS in tackles with 105. 105! Let's be real; I haven't seen 105 tackles in a season watching the Chicago Bulls.
This guy led the nation last year, too, with seven. Seven forced fumbles. Two of them came in some rinky-dink bowl game in the Bahamas. The Bahamas Bowl? Seriously? Is that even a real thing? It sounds like something out of a bad Adam Sandler movie.

Here's the thing, though. Stats are stats. Numbers are numbers. They don't tell you about the fire in a guy's eyes, the way he flies to the ball, the pure, unadulterated rage that fuels a bone-jarring hit. Can you see that in Murdock? Or is he just another stat-padding robot built for the highlight reel?
I'm not saying he is. I'm just asking the question. Because let's be real, college football is overrun with guys who look good on paper but fold under pressure. Is Murdock one of them? Or is he the real deal?
And offcourse, there's the inevitable question: Will this translate to the NFL? Will he be another Khalil Mack, terrorizing quarterbacks for years to come? Or will he be a flash in the pan, a college star who can't cut it against the big boys? I mean, a dude playing for Buffalo ain't exactly in the spotlight.
He's also got 12.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Okay, that's pretty damn good. Maybe this kid is special. Maybe he's the kind of player who can single-handedly change a game.
But so what? Even if he is the next Lawrence Taylor, what does it matter to me? My beloved Chicago Bulls are still a dumpster fire, and no amount of forced fumbles in Buffalo is going to change that. I need a new coffee maker. The cheap one I bought on Amazon last month is already leaking. They expect us to believe this nonsense, and honestly...
Look, I ain't gonna lie. I'm still bitter about the Bulls. But maybe, just maybe, this Red Murdock kid is something special. Maybe he's a glimmer of hope in a sports landscape that's increasingly dominated by corporate greed and overpaid prima donnas. Or maybe I'm just being a naive idiot, clinging to the hope that something good can still come out of this broken system. Who knows?
